Private vs. Shared Rooms: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between a private and shared room is one of the first decisions you'll make when applying. Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide.

When you're looking for affordable housing, one of the first questions you'll face is: private room or shared room? Both options have real advantages — and the right choice depends on your budget, lifestyle, and what you need most right now.

At 1st Florida Housing Solutions, we offer both. Here's an honest breakdown to help you decide.

Private Rooms: Your Own Space

A private room gives you a fully furnished space that's entirely yours. You'll have your own bedroom with a door that locks, while sharing common areas like the kitchen, living room, and bathroom with other residents in the home.

Private rooms start at $1,000/month and include:

  • All utilities (electric, water, internet)
  • Furnished bedroom — move-in ready
  • Access to shared common areas
  • Just $250 deposit to move in

A private room is a great fit if you value personal space, work from home, or simply prefer having a quiet retreat at the end of the day. It's also ideal if you're in a transitional period and want a stable, low-stress environment while you get back on your feet.

Shared Rooms: Community and Savings

A shared room pairs you with one roommate in the same bedroom. It's the most affordable option we offer, and for many residents, it's also the most social — a chance to build a connection with someone in a similar situation.

Shared rooms start at $800/month and include:

  • All utilities (electric, water, internet)
  • Furnished room — move-in ready
  • Access to shared common areas
  • Just $250 deposit to move in

A shared room is a great fit if budget is your top priority, if you're comfortable with a roommate, or if you're on SSI/SSDI and need housing that fits within your monthly income. Many of our residents in shared rooms form genuine friendships and support each other through their transitions.

What Both Options Have in Common

Regardless of which room type you choose, every resident at 1st Florida Housing Solutions gets the same core experience:

  • No credit check — we evaluate you as a person, not a score
  • Utilities included — no surprise bills
  • Furnished and move-in ready — just bring your belongings
  • 1-month minimum — no long-term lease required
  • Dignity and respect — a home environment, not a shelter

How to Decide

Ask yourself two questions:

  1. What's my monthly budget? If $800/month works better than $1,000/month, a shared room gives you the same quality of life at a lower cost.
  2. How important is personal space to me? If having your own room is essential for your wellbeing or work situation, the private room is worth the extra $200/month.

There's no wrong answer — both options are clean, safe, and fully supported by our team.
